Five Common Beginner Surfing Mistakes
Most early mistakes are normal and easy to correct. The key is to work on one change at a time instead of trying to rebuild every movement during the same wave.
Position and paddling
Lying too far forward makes the nose dive; lying too far back creates drag. Find the balanced point where the board sits level, then paddle with long strokes and a relaxed upper body.
Stopping after two strokes is another common issue. Match the wave's speed before attempting to stand.
Standing too quickly
Looking at your feet, standing with a narrow stance or rising before the board is moving all reduce balance. Keep your eyes toward the direction of travel and bring both feet into position in one controlled movement.
Practising the pop-up slowly on land creates a repeatable pattern that becomes faster naturally.
Ignoring safety and feedback
Hold on to your board only when it is safe to do so, protect your head after a fall and leave enough space for others. Listen to short, specific feedback from the coach and try it on the next suitable wave.
